Review of ‘Loisaida’ by Tria Giovan

In 1984, Tria Giovan, a 23-year-old photographer, relocated to a tenement building in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. She dedicated her time to observing the neighborhood’s evolving Puerto Rican and Chinese community, capturing fleeting moments, gestures, and the interplay of color and light. This body of work, recently uncovered and published as “LOISAIDA” by Damiani, presents a remarkable collection resembling stills from a documentary’s B-roll. The photographs emanate a soft, muted tone, with slants of sunlight gently illuminating street corners, evoking a sense of tranquility and stability.

However, beneath the surface, Giovan’s images reveal the ever-changing world around her. As she reflects, “So much has changed since the genesis of ‘Loisaida,'” noting the subsequent displacement of working-class residents due to rising living costs in the area. Yet, amidst the backdrop of a Lower East Side notorious for crime, rampant drug abuse, urban decay, and homelessness, Giovan’s photographs also capture the resilience and vibrancy of the community. Families gather on fire escapes and sidewalks around folding tables, a woman stands in the historic Church of St. Mary, and community members engage in activities such as baseball, wrestling, eating, and window-shopping.

Beyond the layers of gentrification prevalent today, this book serves as a reminder of the timeless universality of a specific time and place. It encapsulates the vibrancy, diversity, and coexistence that existed during that era. Delving into its pages, readers are transported to a bygone era, connecting with a community that has both faced adversity and thrived in the face of it.

The author, Lauren Christensen, serves as an editor at the Book Review, adding her expertise and insight to the publication.
