As spring finally graces us with its presence, we eagerly shed the dull layers of winter and embrace the vibrant greens of new life. The promise of blooming trees, sprucing up our gardens, and basking in the warm sun without the glare of snow is invigorating.
In these uncertain times, many of us continue to work from home, limiting our exposure to the outside world. However, just because we’re indoors doesn’t mean we’re trapped with monotony. We had a chat with Krissy Monahan, owner of Schenectady’s Flower Press, a plant-based and local goods shop, to learn about bringing life to our living spaces.
Growing up immersed in her family’s 125-year-old flower business in Catskill, New York, Krissy is no stranger to plants. When the pandemic halted her and her husband’s pop-up shops, they took the opportunity to open their own business. The Flower Press provides homely decor and hand-screenprinted merchandise accompanied by fresh flowers and potted plants. With up to 30 varieties available, their beginner to intermediate plants mean you don’t need to have a green thumb to bring some life into your home.
Krissy believes that the pandemic has caused many people to become interested in plants as a source of home-based hobby and a means of distraction from the world’s troubles. To help others spruce up their homes, Krissy offers some tips, such as choosing plants that are forgiving and easy to care for, looking for signs of a plant’s health, and making sure to give them enough space to grow.
So why not bring the beauty of nature inside? Incorporating plants into our home spaces can create a more lively atmosphere, and who knows, you might even find that green thumb you never knew you had.
