June 21 (UPI) — Researchers have made an astonishing discovery along Texas’ Gulf Coast as they were documenting the diverse animal life found on its shores. They captured video footage of an intact safe that had washed up on the beach.

The Mission-Aransas Reserve at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute, known for uncovering peculiar items like a collection of eerie dolls, shared a video on YouTube showcasing Jace Tunnell, the reserve’s director, inspecting the safe that had become lodged in the sand.

The video’s description humorously stated, “Everyone dreams of stumbling upon a bag of money while strolling along the beach, but we stumbled upon something even better… a safe!”

Tunnell, along with some assistants, carefully loaded the safe into the back of a pickup truck and then devoted approximately an hour to their endeavor of cracking open the metal box. They employed crowbars, a sledgehammer, and a metal grinder in their efforts. After a series of attempts, the team finally succeeded in unlocking the safe, only to find a packet of silica gel inside.

In the video, Tunnell jokes, “Silica gel? What a fortune we’ve stumbled upon!”

Tunnell noted that there were no discernible markings or inscriptions on the safe that could provide any clues about its origin. He also pointed out that the substantial amount of algae on the exterior suggested that the safe had spent a considerable amount of time submerged in the water before finally washing ashore.
