Marine rescuers in Massachusetts successfully saved and released two dolphins that were stranded in the shallow waters of Cape Cod.
According to a press release from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), the rescue team worked tirelessly for an entire day to return the dolphins to their natural habitat in the ocean.
The global nonprofit organization received reports at 9 a.m. on Thursday regarding multiple dolphins trapped in the shallow water near the mouth of the Herring River in Wellfleet. A dedicated team of marine rescuers promptly responded to assess the dolphins’ location and behavior, as stated in the IFAW’s press release.
Upon arrival, the rescue team found two dolphins stranded in the shallow portion of the river.

“The volunteers continued to monitor the area throughout the morning until they spotted two dolphins in ‘the gut’ of the river, a region known for its challenging navigation due to its shallow mud flats,” said Lauren Cooley, an animal rescue responder and stranding biologist with the IFAW.
When attempts to guide the dolphins to deeper waters proved unsuccessful, the team made the decision to use specialized dolphin rescue vehicles to lift the dolphins out of the water.
By 4 p.m., the group utilized the unique mobile dolphin rescue vehicle owned by the IFAW to continue their rescue efforts.
