July 14 (UPI) — Firefighters and animal control officers in California displayed their heroism as they came together to rescue four trapped baby raccoons from a chimney.

In a news release, the San Bernardino County Fire department revealed that the Upland Fire Station 161, in conjunction with animal control officers, arrived at the scene after an Upland resident reported the presence of a raccoon family in their chimney.

Determined to save the adorable creatures, firefighters scaled the roof and verified the presence of the mother raccoon and her four babies inside the chimney.

After a two-hour operation, the team successfully retrieved all four baby raccoons. They were then taken to a wildlife rescue facility where a veterinarian examined them.

In an effort to reunite the family, a plan was devised to coax the mother raccoon out of the chimney voluntarily during the evening. However, despite her initial exit, the mother could not be located later in the evening or in the following days, preventing a reunion with her babies.

Fire officials wrote, “The babies were transferred to a facility that will provide care until they mature enough to survive independently. They will then be released in the hills near the incident site.”
