Following House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s announcement of a debt-ceiling deal with President Joe Biden, Republican leaders circulated a fact sheet praising McCarthy’s victories. The deal, known as the Fiscal Responsibility Act, includes spending cuts but also exempts critical veterans programs, national defense priorities, Social Security, and Medicare. Critics argue that the bill does not actually reduce spending and does not address the unsustainability of the federal budget. Though Republicans previously pushed for spending cuts, they did not prioritize them in this negotiation. Despite objections from some party members, the bill passed in the House and is expected to pass in the Senate. This shows that although Republican rhetoric tends to prioritize smaller government, they may prioritize government programs that are popular with their constituents.
