Republicans Moving to Dismantle 6 Progressive Policies at Veterans Affairs Instituted by President Biden

House Republicans are set to advance a spending bill for the Department of Veterans Affairs, hoping to challenge the Biden administration’s policies on controversial issues like abortion and transgender health care. The White House has stated that they would veto the bill due to concerns about its impact on reproductive health care, LGBTQ+ Americans, climate change initiatives, and diversity and inclusion efforts. Despite this, the bill is expected to go to a vote in the House before lawmakers go on recess, and it may become even more objectionable to the White House if conservative lawmakers attach certain amendments to it.

Republicans are proposing six amendments to the $152 billion spending bill, which represents an $18 billion increase from the previous year.

One of the amendments, introduced by Reps. Bob Good and Andrew Clyde, aims to block the implementation of recommendations made by the Pentagon’s Naming Commission, which seeks to rename military assets named after Confederate figures. Another amendment, proposed by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, aims to prevent federal funding from being used for gender-affirming surgeries within the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Rep. Matt Rosendale’s amendment seeks to withhold funds from promoting adult cabaret performances or LGBTQ-themed events within the Department of Veterans Affairs. Rep. Ronny Jackson’s amendment aims to prevent the establishment of an advisory panel on environmental, social, and governance investing (ESG) within the VA. Additionally, Rep. Andy Ogles is proposing an amendment that eliminates exceptions to abortion funding in the bill, while Reps. Chip Roy and Kat Cammack want to block federal dollars from being used to implement President Biden’s climate change initiatives in the VA.

It remains to be seen which amendments will be included in the final bill.

In conclusion, House Republicans are pursuing a spending bill that challenges the Biden administration’s policies on various contentious issues. The bill is facing opposition from the White House, but it is still expected to move forward with proposed amendments that could further aggravate the administration.
