Several Republican 2024 presidential hopefuls have expressed criticism towards Donald Trump as he faces 37 federal counts for allegedly hoarding documents after leaving the White House.

Following his indictment, Trump has retaliated against his critics, including former members of his staff. He referred to his former Attorney General, Bill Barr, as a “Gutless Pig” and called his former chief of staff, John Kelly, “weak” with a “VERY small ‘brain'”.

Chris Christie, the former Governor of New Jersey who recently announced his bid for president, labeled Trump as the “worst manager in the history of the American presidency” due to these remarks. Christie expressed this sentiment during an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union”.

Former Vice President Mike Pence, another presidential hopeful, stated that it is premature to determine whether he would pardon Trump if he were to be convicted. While Pence cannot defend the criminal allegations against Trump, he finds it concerning that many Republicans are assuming Trump’s guilt without sufficient evidence. Pence shared these thoughts during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press”.

Pence also questioned Trump’s commitment to conservative principles, claiming that he was deviating from his stance on abortion and sharing “identical” views on the national debt with President Joe Biden. Pence hoped that Trump would eventually accept the results of the 2020 election, which Trump has consistently disputed.

Additionally, Asa Hutchinson, the former Governor of Arkansas and another presidential hopeful, expressed doubts about Trump’s ability to pardon himself if reelected. Hutchinson believes that a self-pardon goes against the intentions of the Constitution. He voiced these concerns on ABC’s “This Week”. Hutchinson also declared that he would not accept the Republican National Committee’s pledge to support the eventual GOP nominee if they were under indictment.

On the other hand, Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy voiced support for Trump, stating that he should be pardoned if convicted. Ramaswamy, a biopharma entrepreneur, called for the dismantling of institutions like the Federal Bureau of Investigation over allegations of political bias. He made these remarks during an appearance on “Fox News Sunday”.

Ramaswamy emphasized the importance of standing up for principles over politics.
