The San Francisco Department of Building Inspection promptly instructed the landlord, Shorenstein, to dismantle the steel structure and issued several summonses. The charges included a $761 building permit fee for removing the sign, $1,580 in Planning Department enforcement fees, and $2,106 in Department of Building Inspection enforcement fees. The landlord has reportedly paid the penalty, and an additional expense of $3,500 was incurred for removing the X sign as stated in the retroactive permit issued last Thursday.

However, X’s law firm, Udell Wang LLP, has presented court documents stating that the company is up to date with rent payments. On July 28, Musk installed the oversized and pulsating “X” sign on the roof of X’s headquarters, which immediately garnered negative reactions from neighbors. Musk shared a 19-second video showcasing the logo illuminating the night sky before eventually removing the sign on July 30. In a tweet, Musk sarcastically referred to his landlord by saying they kept calling the police about the sign modifications, accompanied by a clown emoji and a meme from “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” Musk’s enthusiasm for the flashing sign was not shared by many Bay Area residents, with one resident, Christopher Beale, even tweeting about how the strobing X sign was an eyesore even during the day, sharing a video demonstrating its impact on his apartment.
