July 12 (UPI) — According to a publication in the journal Science Robotics, scientists from Cornell, Duke University, and the University of Auckland in New Zealand have discovered that companion robots integrated with artificial intelligence technology may hold the key to reducing loneliness in isolated individuals.
The study highlights the fact that the number of Americans without close friends has quadrupled since 1990.
“Currently, having a genuine friend remains the most effective solution, based on all available evidence,” stated Murali Doraiswamy, a professor of psychiatry and geriatrics at Duke University. “However, until society prioritizes social connectedness and eldercare, robots can offer a solution to the millions of isolated individuals who have no other options.”
The researchers also noted that an increasing body of research suggests that robots can decrease stress and loneliness while promoting the health and activity levels of older individuals, allowing them to age in place.
The study proposes a novel approach to evaluating the effectiveness of companion robots in aiding individuals. The hope is that robots can provide support to those who are unable to find human companionship.
“Artificial intelligence presents exciting possibilities for equipping companion robots with advanced capabilities to foster social connections,” stated Dr. Elizabeth Broadbent, a professor of Psychological Medicine at the University of Auckland. “However, it is crucial to establish ethical and trustworthy guidelines.”
