Renowned Musician Lineker Shares Powerful Insights on Refugees in Captivating New Single

In March, 62-year-old Gary Lineker made headlines when he drew a comparison between the language used to launch a government asylum seeker policy and the rhetoric of 1930s Germany. This led to his temporary removal from the BBC’s Match Of The Day. However, Lineker is not the only public figure speaking out against such policies. British-born musician Nitin Sawhney recently released a new song titled “Illegal,” which addresses these issues directly.

“Illegal” features Lineker, along with voices from the domestic violence charity Asha Projects, which focuses on supporting South Asian women. Sawhney, known for his work in jazz, hip-hop, orchestral, and electronic music, has previously collaborated with notable artists such as Sir Paul McCartney, Sting, and Pink Floyd. He also received an Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement award in 2017.

Sawhney expressed his admiration for Lineker, stating, “I thought it would be great if Gary recorded on my new album. After watching him courageously challenge the government’s treatment of refugees and asylum seekers, I wanted him to contribute his voice to the project. I also invited Asian women asylum seekers from a refuge to share their experiences and thoughts in the studio. Their bravery deeply moved me, and I believe it’s important to counter the government’s attempts to dehumanize their struggle and hope.”

Sawhney commended Lineker for using his platform to promote compassion and kindness, especially in the face of racism and bigotry. The collaboration between Lineker, Sawhney, and the voices from Asha Projects is an effort to lend support and provide context to the experiences of these incredible women.
