Remini Harassment Suit vs. Scientology Church: Initial Court Date Scheduled

A lawsuit filed this week by actress Leah Remini, a well-known critic of Scientology and a former member herself, has been scheduled for an initial court date in November. The lawsuit alleges that Remini has been stalked and harassed since she left the religion in 2013. The complaint, filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court, includes allegations of civil harassment, stalking, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and defamation. Scientology leader David Miscavige is also named as a defendant. Judge William F. Fahey has scheduled a case management conference for November 30.

In response to Remini’s lawsuit, the church issued a statement calling it “ludicrous” and the allegations “pure lunacy.” The statement further claims that Remini has been spreading hate and falsehoods for a decade and is now offended when people exercise their right to free speech. The church states that it is not intimidated by Remini’s actions and accuses her of blatant harassment. The statement suggests that if Remini does not believe in free speech, she should consider emigrating to Russia.

Remini, who is 53 years old and starred in “The King of Queens,” is seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages in her complaint. The suit alleges that the defendants have undertaken a campaign to ruin her life and livelihood since she publicly departed Scientology in 2013.

According to the lawsuit, Remini has been a target of stalking, surveillance, harassment, threats, intimidation, and malicious rumors spread through Scientology-controlled social media accounts. The suit also alleges that Scientology has used its tax-exempt funds to pay social media companies to promote harmful posts about Remini.

In addition, the suit claims that Scientology has harassed and threatened Remini’s family, friends, colleagues, and business associates, causing her to lose personal relationships and business opportunities. Remini states that she is filing this lawsuit to protect her rights to speak the truth about Scientology and to prevent the intimidation and abuse of those exercising their First Amendment rights.

Leah Remini is known for her book “Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology,” published in 2015, and her hosting of the A&E documentary series “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath” from 2016-19.
