Terry Kirkman, Founding Member of The Association, Dies at 83
The music world mourns the loss of Terry Kirkman, a founding member of the legendary folk-rock band The Association, who passed away at the age of 83. The news of his death was announced on the band’s official Facebook page, leaving fans heartbroken.
Kirkman’s talent as a songwriter was evident in The Association’s popular hits such as “Cherish,” “Windy,” and “Never My Love.” The group received immense recognition and was nominated for six Grammy Awards, with three nominations for their iconic song “Cherish.”
In a 2015 interview, Kirkman shared the mysterious process of writing “Cherish,” saying, “I actually channeled it. Or I was channeled. I really don’t know what the source was. I’ve never understood the process nor do I think I will ever understand the process.”
Aside from his musical accomplishments, Kirkman played alongside Frank Zappa in California during the early 1960s. He later formed The Inner Tubes with Jules Alexander, which eventually evolved into The Men. When The Men disbanded, several members, including Kirkman, came together to form The Association.
The Association gained further recognition by opening the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and making appearances on popular TV shows like “The Ed Sullivan Show” and “The Smothers Brothers.”
After leaving The Association in 1972, Kirkman briefly rejoined the group in 1979 before leaving for good in the mid-1980s. In his later years, he dedicated himself to helping artists in recovery as a drug counselor.
Terry Kirkman is survived by his wife Heidi, daughter Sasha, son-in-law, and two grandchildren. His legacy will forever live on through his incredible music and the memories he created with The Association.
