David McCallum, ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E.’ Teen Heartthrob, Dies at 90
LOS ANGELES — Actor David McCallum, the beloved star of the hit series “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” and “NCIS,” has passed away at the age of 90. McCallum died on Monday of natural causes at New York Presbyterian Hospital, surrounded by his family.
In a statement, CBS said, “David was a gifted actor and author, and beloved by many around the world. He led an incredible life, and his legacy will forever live on through his family and the countless hours on film and television that will never go away.”
Scottish-born McCallum began his career appearing in films such as “A Night to Remember,” “The Great Escape,” and “The Greatest Story Ever Told.” However, it was his role as Illya Kuryakin in “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” that catapulted him to stardom in the mid-1960s.
The show, which debuted in 1964, followed the adventures of secret agent Napoleon Solo and his Russian sidekick Illya Kuryakin. Teenage girls were particularly drawn to McCallum’s good looks and enigmatic character, making him a household name.
After the success of “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,” McCallum went on to star in various television shows and movies, including the role of Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard in “NCIS” from 2003 until his death. His portrayal of the bookish pathologist was both comedic and endearing.
McCallum was a true Renaissance man, with a deep passion for science and culture. In addition to his acting career, he also conducted a symphony orchestra and studied autopsies to prepare for his role on “NCIS.”
