Release of ‘Dune: Part Two’ Faces Delays due to Ongoing Actors and Writers Strikes

Warner Bros. has officially announced the delay of the highly anticipated film “Dune: Part Two” from November of this year to March 15 next year, citing the ongoing actors’ strike as the reason for the postponement. The science-fiction sequel, directed by Denis Villeneuve, features an all-star cast including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Javier Bardem, Stellan Skarsgård, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, and Léa Seydoux.

The decision to delay the release was made in order to ensure that the cast can actively promote the film, following the success of the first installment which won an Oscar in 2021. As the actors’ strike continues into its second month, “Dune: Part Two” joins the growing list of 2023 films that have been impacted by the labor dispute. Despite the absence of stars at red carpet events and magazine covers, many recent releases have proceeded as scheduled. However, SAG-AFTRA, the actors’ union, has requested its members not to promote studio films during the strike.

MGM Studios also faced a setback with Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers,” starring Zendaya, as it withdrew from its opening slot at the Venice Film Festival and postponed its premiere until April next year. Sony followed suit by pushing back the release of the next “Ghostbusters” film and removing “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” from its early 2024 schedule.

In addition to the “Dune” delay, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have rescheduled “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” to April 12. This change has prompted the shift of Warner Bros.’s “Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” from April to December 2024.

Despite these adjustments, Warner Bros. has maintained the release dates for its other 2023 films, including “Wonka” on December 15, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” on December 20, and “The Color Purple” on December 25.
