Exactly one year ago today, on August 21, 2022, a disturbing incident occurred at McAuliffe Elementary School in Riverside. A registered sex offender managed to gain unauthorized access to the school grounds by hopping over a fence and entering the girls’ bathroom. Thankfully, the quick response of the Riverside Police Department led to the apprehension of the suspect.
The incident took place at around 12:30 p.m. on a Friday when the Riverside Police Department received a report regarding a man on the school premises. A vigilant campus supervisor witnessed the man emerging from the restroom and heard the distressing cries of a young girl inside.
Displaying bravery and dedication to the safety of the students, the supervisor pursued the suspect as he attempted to flee by leaping over multiple fences and making his way to the parking lot, where he escaped in a vehicle. Although the suspect managed to escape at that moment, the witness provided crucial information, including the vehicle description and license plate number.
Based on the information provided, the police were able to trace the suspect’s vehicle to a business in Placentia. Law enforcement officers promptly responded to the location, successfully apprehending the suspect, identified as Logan Nighswonger, a 32-year-old resident of Riverside. Nighswonger, a registered sex offender, was immediately taken into custody.
Due to the seriousness of the offenses committed, Nighswonger was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on charges of attempting sex acts with a child under the age of 10 and being a registered sex offender on school grounds.
In response to the incident, Allan Mucerino, the Superintendent of Alvord Unified School District, expressed gratitude towards law enforcement for their swift action in apprehending the suspect.
