Reflecting on the BTS Decade: A review of 2013-2023

BTS, the global sensation that has taken the world by storm, started off in 2013 as a hip-hop group under a small label called Big Hit Entertainment. Their debut single, “2 Cool 4 Skool,” became the foundation of their philosophy centered around self-love, and their name “Bulletproof Boys” reflected their desire to shield themselves from the prejudices of the world. The group, consisting of Jin, RM, J-Hope, Suga, Jimin, V, and Jungkook, was put together by producer Bang Si-hyuk, who established Big Hit after dropping out of JYP Entertainment.

Despite facing hurdles as a minor genre in mainstream K-pop, BTS clinched three rookie of the year awards in their first year. In 2014, they entered the American market with their song “No More Dream,” which peaked at No. 3 on the Oricon singles chart in Japan. The group relied on social media interactions and self-prepared events, like the “Muster” fan meeting and “BTS Festa,” to connect with their fans.

The “Hwa Yang Yeon Hwa” trilogy, which started in 2015, marked a new phase for BTS as it took their message of self-love to a deeper level and involved all seven members in music production. This album series earned them global recognition and opened doors for them in the American music scene. Their album “Wings” topped iTunes’ album charts in 97 countries and entered the UK Official Charts as the first K-pop album to do so.

BTS continued to make breakthroughs in 2017, entering mainstream American music shows and winning the Top Social Artist award at the Billboard Music Awards, which they won for five consecutive years, and performing at the American Music Awards as the first Korean artist to do so. The band’s “Love Yourself” album series began, and the album “Love Yourself: Her” debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 and sold over a million copies, earning them their first million-seller title.

In 2018, BTS topped the Billboard 200 with their album “Love Yourself: Tear” and went on to win at the BBMAs for the second time and at the AMAs for the first. The septet also spoke at the UN, becoming the first South Korean group to address a UN session. In 2019, they became the first Korean singer to attend the Grammy Awards as an award presenter and appeared as performers the following year.

BTS continued to break records with their “Map of the Soul” album series, topping the UK Official Chart with “Map of the Soul: Persona” and becoming the first group since the Beatles to top the Billboard 200 three times in less than a year. Their album “Map of the Soul: 7” was named the top-selling album of 2020 by the IFPI. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, BTS broke new records with their first English song, “Dynamite,” which hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and their album “Be,” and its lead track, “Life Goes On,” topped both Billboard’s albums and singles charts at once, making BTS the first Korean artist to achieve this feat.
