Redlands to Receive $4.5 Million for Homeless Housing and Outreach Programs – Orange County Register

Redlands City Council has given a significant boost to homeless outreach efforts by approving a $4.5 million grant. The grant, awarded by the California Interagency Council on Homelessness Unit, will be used for the Encampment Resolution Funding Program.

During the council meeting on July 25, Assistant City Manager Chris Boatman expressed his satisfaction with the grant, stating, “I’m delighted to end the meeting on such a positive note with the announcement of this $4.5 million grant awarded to the city.”

The funds will be instrumental in expanding homeless outreach and housing services in Redlands. The grant will be allocated towards various initiatives, including the improvement of encampments, the hiring of additional outreach staff, the establishment of permanent housing options, and emergency housing through hotel vouchers. Additionally, the grant will address community concerns surrounding homelessness and housing. Ultimately, the city aims to assist approximately 200 homeless individuals.

According to San Bernardino County officials, there were 324 homeless individuals identified in Redlands during the Point in Time count held on January 26. Across the entire county, there were 4,195 homeless individuals identified. This significant grant will help make a tangible impact on these numbers.

City officials plan to collaborate with local nonprofits to channel most of the funds towards the provision of support and services to homeless individuals. Discussions regarding agreements with nonprofits will be held in subsequent meetings.

The grant will be utilized over the course of three years, ensuring sustained efforts towards addressing homelessness in Redlands. With this substantial funding, the city is poised to make significant progress in its homeless outreach endeavors.
