Another group of migrants from Texas arrived in Los Angeles on Saturday morning, marking the 13th arrival since June 14, as confirmed by Mayor Karen Bass’ office.
Deputy Mayor of Communications, Zach Seidl, stated, “A bus carrying migrants from Texas arrived at Union Station today at 8:55 AM PT. This marks the thirteenth bus to arrive. The city has been working closely with various departments, the county, nonprofit organizations, and faith partners to implement a plan that was established earlier this year. As soon as we were made aware of the bus yesterday, we promptly executed our plan.”
According to city officials, Los Angeles has received nearly 500 migrants from Texas since the first bus arrived.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has been organizing these trips under Operation Lone Star due to the overwhelming number of immigrants crossing the Mexican border in Texas. Operation Lone Star is a collaborative effort between the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Military Department to tackle the influx of immigrants, illegal drug trade, and human smuggling occurring along the southern border of Texas and Mexico.
Abbott revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that, as of August 26, Operation Lone Star has led to over 420,800 apprehensions, 33,600 criminal arrests, 30,500 felony charges, the seizure of 436 million fentanyl doses, and the transportation of 33,230 migrants to cities designated as “Sanctuary Cities.”
Abbott emphasized, “Texas is securing the border in President (Joe) Biden’s absence.”
Abbott stated in June after the first bus arrived in Los Angeles, “Texas’ small border towns continue to be overwhelmed and overrun by the thousands of people illegally crossing into Texas from Mexico due to President Biden’s refusal to secure the border.”
He added, “Los Angeles is a major city that migrants seek to go to, especially now that its city leaders have declared it a sanctuary city. Our border communities are on the front lines of President Biden’s border crisis, and Texas will continue to provide necessary relief until he fulfills his responsibility to secure the border.”
Bass has expressed her frustration with Abbott’s office for not providing sufficient information about these shipments to Los Angeles. She informed KNX that if Abbott’s concerns and actions were genuine, someone in the Texan government would notify and coordinate with them.
She said, “We only hear about the buses when they’re already on their way. We have no knowledge of who will be on the bus, the number of people, or their condition when they arrive. Sometimes they haven’t had any food and barely enough water.”
In June, the Los Angeles City Council approved a motion to officially establish the city as a sanctuary city.
Last month, the council passed a motion calling for an investigation by the City Attorney’s Office to determine if any crimes were committed before or on June 14, when Abbott sent 42 migrants to Los Angeles in the first shipment.
