June 23 (UPI) — Honda is issuing a recall for select models due to a potential rearview camera malfunction. Models affected include the 2018-2023 Odyssey, 2019-2022 Pilot, and 2019-2023 Passport vehicles. While no injuries or deaths have been reported in relation to this issue, it poses a safety concern.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified a faulty Media Oriented Systems Transport coaxial cable connector as the root cause of intermittent rearview image display failures.
NHTSA has announced that Honda dealerships will provide a free cable harness replacement and install a straightening cover over the cable connector for affected owners. Letters notifying owners of the recall will be mailed on July 24. Alternatively, owners can contact Honda directly for more information regarding the recall.
According to the NHTSA safety recall report, the communication coaxial cable was improperly designed and manufactured, leading to deformed terminals and potentially resulting in poor or lost connections between the audio display unit and the vehicle cable connector.
When the cable malfunctions, audio system disturbances such as popping or crackling sounds may occur. Additionally, the audio display screens may flicker. This issue affects Odyssey models built between January 19, 2017, and June 6, 2023, Pilots built between September 18, 2017, and December 12, 2022, and Passports built between November 6, 2017, and June 5, 2023.
In January 2021, Honda extended the warranty to address audio-related problems. Subsequently, Honda discovered the rearview camera malfunction in their vehicles, prompting this recall. From May 2017 to June 2023, Honda received 273,870 warranty claims related to this issue.
Owners who have paid for repairs out of pocket will be eligible for reimbursement. NHTSA assures that the replacement coaxial cable terminal has been redesigned and improved with the involvement of a new component part supplier.
