Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan, stars of the original 1984 and the 2010 remake of “The Karate Kid,” are set to reprise their popular characters for the new “The Karate Kid” film at Sony Pictures.
Jonathan Entwistle, the award-winning creator of “I’m Not Okay with This” and “The End of the F—ing World,” is directing the untitled feature. Sony Pictures revealed that the movie will continue the mythology of the original franchise.
A global search for a new actor to play the title character launched today, with Chan and Macchio starring in an introductory video you can see below.
Scripted by Rob Lieber (“Peter Rabbit”), the exact plot details are under wraps. However, sources say the story will focus on a teenager from China now living on the U.S. east coast who finds strength and direction through martial arts and a tough but wise mentor.
Karen Rosenfelt is the film’s producer, and production aims to begin shooting in the Spring for a December 13th, 2024 release.
There was previous speculation that this was to be a Mr. Miyagi prequel, but it seems otherwise. The final season of the “Cobra Kai” sequel series starring Macchio is also in production for release in late 2024.
