Rabbit Fire Containment Reaches 90%, Covering 8,200 Acres

The Rabbit Fire in Lakeview was successfully contained to 90% on Friday, as reported by the Riverside County Fire Department.

An update on the containment figure was announced at 7 p.m. on Thursday, marking an improvement from the previous update at 7 a.m. on the same day where the containment increased from 75% to 80%.

Firefighters faced challenging conditions on Thursday, including excessive heat, low humidity, and difficult terrain, as they worked tirelessly to strengthen containment lines and perform necessary suppression repairs.

As part of their duties, firefighters will continue patrolling overnight and extinguishing any remaining fires within the affected area.

The department anticipates achieving full containment on Sunday, which is two days later than initially projected.

All evacuation warnings were lifted as of noon on Wednesday, ensuring the safety of the affected residents.

The fire has been responsible for burning 8,283 acres since Monday night, when the figure was last updated from 7,950 acres.

The fire originated on July 14 at approximately 3:30 p.m. in the northeast area of Gilman Springs Road and Jack Rabbit trail. Although 152 structures were under threat, no damage or destruction has been reported.

The firefighting effort involved a total of 1,578 personnel, including 184 fire engines, 20 water tenders, seven helicopters, and 30 hand crews. Additional air tankers were dispatched from various locations in the state.

While the only reported casualty was one civilian injured, details regarding the individual and the severity of the injury have not been disclosed.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Rabbit Fire is the largest among the four brush fires that broke out in Riverside County on July 14 and 15. The other three fires were fully or nearly fully contained by Tuesday.
