Last Wednesday evening, a group of protesters blocked all the eastbound lanes on the Ventura (134) Freeway at the Golden State (5) interchange in Glendale. The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert at 9 p.m., stating that the eastbound Ventura Freeway at Central Avenue would be blocked for three hours until the protesters were cleared. According to KCAL, numerous big rigs and individuals blocked all lanes on the freeway, leading to the issuance of the SigAlert.
The protest had started at Burbank City Hall and later moved to the interchange of the Ventura and Golden State freeways and the Hollywood (101) Freeway at Vineland Avenue. Signs on the freeway carried messages such as “Adam Schiff Don’t Ignore Us” and “Open the Road to Life,” as reported by KCAL. The California Highway Patrol closed the transition road from the eastbound Ventura Freeway to the northbound Golden State Freeway.
The protesters, organizing an event called “Rally for Life,” expressed their dissatisfaction with Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Burbank, according to KCAL. The group claimed that Schiff had not taken sufficient action to address the blockade of the Lachin Corridor, a mountain road that connects Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. KCAL further reported that Azerbaijan had initiated the blockade on December 12, following clashes along the Azerbaijan-Armenia border that resulted in multiple deaths. The blockade prevented essential supplies, humanitarian aid, and external support from reaching approximately 120,000 civilians in the region.
Schiff, along with other congressional representatives, authored a resolution condemning the blockade and urging the United States and the international community to investigate any potential war crimes committed by Azerbaijani forces. In a statement on Monday, Schiff emphasized the need for action to protect the people of Artsakh and their right to self-determination. He called for the lifting of the blockade and immediate intervention by President Biden to address the dire situation in the region. As a co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues, Schiff has consistently advocated for international efforts to peacefully resolve the crisis and support the independence of the Republic of Artsakh.
USAID, which stands for the United States Agency for International Development, is the federal agency responsible for administering civilian foreign aid and development assistance. It is important to note that the Nagorno Karabakh Republic is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but is referred to as Artsakh by Armenians.
