Protect Your Belongings: Storage Units in Atlanta’s Metro Area At High Risk of Theft, Warn Chamblee Law Enforcement Officials

Police urge people to check their storage units this weekend as thieves are focusing on these locations and stealing valuable items. The problem lies in the lack of security in many spots and customers not inspecting their units regularly. In fact, it often takes weeks before the police are notified of any theft.

“It’s essential to go and inspect your storage unit,” advised Justin Haley.

Just this week, Haley visited his storage unit at Public Storage on Savoy Dr. in Chamblee and discovered that thieves had stolen electronics and collectibles worth at least $15,000.

“Some things are irreplaceable. Those are the things that upset me,” said Haley.

According to Haley, the staff at the facility revealed that numerous customers had reported thefts over the past two months. Channel 2 Action News is awaiting confirmation from management, while the Chamblee Police Department is collecting records.

“The lock was not broken. Somehow, the thief had obtained a master key or something similar to open it,” Haley explained.

Surveillance photos released by the Atlanta Police Department depict two men believed to have stolen from multiple units at Extra Storage Space on Northside Drive. Investigators suspect that these individuals broke into 16 units within just two days in August.

Police reports indicate that they stole a dirt bike, four TVs, and 2 MacBook computers from one unit alone. It took two weeks before the theft was discovered.

Similarly, no locks were damaged in this case. Customers speculate that the thieves accessed one unit, climbed up, cut through the ceiling covering, and made their way through other units.

“We’re still investigating that,” said Lt. Damian Crowder. “There might be other ways they could have entered or exited. So, we’re not entirely certain, but it’s a possibility.”
