Prominent Trump Advocate and Legal Fighter of 2020 Election Results, Lin Wood, Announces Retirement

Pro-Trump lawyer Lin Wood, known for his efforts to challenge the 2020 election results, has officially retired from practicing law in order to avoid possible disbarment in Georgia. Wood made this announcement on Tuesday through a post on Telegram, a social media platform he turned to after being permanently banned from Twitter. He shared a screenshot of a letter he sent to the State Bar of Georgia, formally requesting to be transferred to retired status without the possibility of readmission.

Wood’s status on the Georgia bar’s online directory has been updated from “active member in good standing” to “retired.” Additionally, the State Bar of Georgia has filed a notice stating that they are dismissing the disciplinary complaints against Wood. In a court filing shared with CNBC, officials from the bar explained that by allowing Wood to retire and prohibiting him from practicing law, the goals of disciplinary action, including protecting the public and the integrity of the judiciary and legal profession, have been achieved.

Despite CNBC’s request for comment, Wood has remained silent on the matter. However, he did mention on Telegram that his retirement from law did not occur in the manner he would have preferred, but he believes that God is sovereign over everything.

Lin Wood was once a prominent defamation lawyer, representing clients such as Richard Jewell, the parents of JonBenet Ramsey, as well as Kyle Rittenhouse and Nicholas Sandmann in recent times. However, he gained notoriety for spreading election conspiracy theories and attempting to overturn President Joe Biden’s victory in Georgia, which ultimately failed.

The Georgia State Bar initiated disciplinary proceedings against Wood in February 2021, citing potential violations of state rules of conduct and concerns about his mental fitness in a lengthy memo. Wood responded by filing a complaint in federal court accusing the bar officials of violating his rights and requesting a mental health evaluation. However, his case was dismissed by a judge, and that decision was later upheld by a federal appeals court.

Wood also faced contentious disciplinary hearings in the Georgia Supreme Court in May, where transcripts of the proceedings posted by Wood’s “FightBack Foundation” revealed disagreements between him, his attorney, and the presiding special master, Thomas Cauthorn. Wood has criticized Cauthorn on Telegram, where he enjoys a large following.

Prior to his retirement, Wood was entangled in various other legal issues. He is currently being sued by his former partners in state court in Georgia for an alleged breach of a settlement agreement. Additionally, he was fined $5,000 in June for repeatedly disregarding an order preventing him from disparaging his former colleagues. In Michigan, officials have called for punishment against Wood and other lawyers involved in an attempt to decertify the state’s 2020 election results, although the impact of Wood’s retirement on these matters remains unclear.
