Producer Explains Decreased Number of Sex Scenes in ‘Outlander’ Season 7

  • Maril Davis, the producer of “Outlander,” recently discussed the absence of love scenes between Jamie and Claire in season seven.
  • She explained that the show is not disregarding intimacy, but rather focusing on other storylines this season.
  • Davis also acknowledged that they can never replicate the magic of the iconic “Wedding” episode.

Viewers familiar with “Outlander” understand the significance of the show’s sex scenes throughout its history.

The physical intimacy between Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitríona Balfe) serves as a means of connection, expressing various emotions such as joy, passion, playfulness, sorrow, and even confusion amidst a changing world.

However, these steamy moments have been significantly reduced in recent seasons.

Season six introduced an intimacy coordinator and featured a few well-placed sex scenes, but season seven has only included two, with only one involving the central couple.

In an interview with Insider, executive producer Maril Davis explained the decision to decrease physical intimacy.

Davis expressed that certain aspects of earlier seasons cannot be replicated, like the iconic “Wedding night” episode.

As the show evolves, different storytelling elements come into play, and certain scenes may not fit naturally or organically.

While the show acknowledges intimacy, it aims to explore alternate ways of portraying it.

Davis revealed that a particularly racy scene from the books, set in Ticonderoga, did not make it into the show’s storyline planning.

In the scene, Jamie and Claire find a moment of solitude in a walled garden at the army camp and contemplate taking advantage of it. However, due to circumstances, they shift gears and choose to enjoy individual pleasure. This unexpected twist leaves Jamie bewildered.

The removal of certain scenes resulted from a lack of space and a need for organic storytelling.

Davis emphasized the importance of intimate moments aligning with the narrative and how condensing storylines can make it challenging.

Season seven incorporates storylines from multiple books, requiring the show to service numerous plots and ultimately change and evolve the overall story and love story of the characters.

While fans await the latter half of season seven, Davis hinted that there may be intimate moments in store.
