Probationer from LA County to be Sentenced for Bank Robbery

A man from Los Angeles County is scheduled to be sentenced on Monday for a series of bank robberies that occurred within a six-day period. This happened while he was on supervised release for previous bank robbery convictions over ten years ago.

Last year, Rickey Lewis, a 54-year-old resident of Willowbrook, pleaded guilty to three counts of bank robbery and one count of attempted bank robbery, as confirmed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

In January 2019, Lewis successfully robbed two JPMorgan Chase bank branches in Gardena and an International City Bank branch in Long Beach, stealing a total of $4,035 in cash. He also attempted to rob a Bank of America branch in Downey.

During the robberies, Lewis made threats to shoot the bank tellers, although it was unclear whether he was actually armed. Additionally, he had clear tape on his fingers. The bank tellers, fearing for their lives, handed over the cash, as documented in court papers.

An affidavit filed in Los Angeles federal court revealed that law enforcement found a partial palm print from the Long Beach bank robbery that matched Lewis’ palm print.

It is important to note that Lewis was on supervised release for previous bank robbery convictions when he committed this recent spree. His earlier convictions stemmed from a string of six bank robberies that took place in South Los Angeles and Inglewood over the course of a month in February 2006.

The federal prosecutors emphasized that Lewis can face a maximum of 20 years in federal prison for each count.
