In a recent ruling, a former Orange County-based physician was subjected to a harsh 151-month imprisonment for illicitly prescribing over 120,000 opioid pills over six years without a legitimate medical purpose in exchange for cash and insurance payments. Dzung Anh Pham, a 61-year old Tustin resident, had pled guilty to a conspiracy charge of distributing controlled drugs. His now-defunct Irvine Village Urgent Care served as a hub for his and co-defendant Jennifer Nguyen’s illegal activities, where narcotics like oxycodone, hydrocodone, and amphetamine salts were trafficked. His co-conspirator, 52-year old Nguyen, admitted the allegations brought against her and is serving 33 months in prison coupled with a $10,000 fine. Pham’s plea agreement listed 18 other clients, and the prosecution asserts that between January 2013 and December 2018, he wrote fraudulent prescriptions for nearly 53,693 pills of oxycodone, 68,795 pills of hydrocodone, and 29,286 pills of amphetamine salts. The charges further revealed that five people who received prescriptions from the tainted practice eventually died of overdoses. The presiding judge was Josephine L. Staton, who ordered Pham to pay a fine of $35,000 and ordered him to be immediately remanded in custody.
