Frank Field, a former Labour MP appointed as a Government adviser, characterized the allocation of social homes to migrants as a “scandal”.
He argued that taxpayer-funded housing should be reserved for “those citizens who have made the greatest contributions to society, who have diligently paid their taxes, and whose children have not caused any trouble. They should have first priority for any available housing.”
The Government’s plan to revisit this policy was criticized by Shelter, the homeless charity, which suggested that ministers should focus on constructing more new social homes instead.
Polly Neate, the chief executive of Shelter, stated, “If British citizens are pushed up the priority list, individuals with greater needs, including homeless families with children who have every right to be here, and those fleeing war in places like Ukraine, will be overlooked and deprived of housing.”
“Essentially, this policy acknowledges the government’s failure to build an adequate amount of social housing,” Neate added.
