Printers have long been a source of frustration and disappointment. They consistently fail to perform their basic functions, wasting our time, money, and brainpower. The reality is that there are no truly good printers, only those that are slightly less awful than others. It’s clear from our coverage during Printer Week that printers cannot be reformed and we must put an end to their tyranny in our lives.
Even if you happen to have a printer that satisfies your needs, it’s hard to ignore the countless people who are driven mad by their own devices. The printer industry has long treated its customers poorly, and this behavior should not be rewarded. Instead, we should starve printers of their purpose by refusing to print anything unnecessary.
Every document, photo, or assignment we choose not to print brings us one step closer to a future where printers are obsolete. Of course, there may be instances where printing is necessary, and in those cases, it’s understandable to use a printer. However, our collective ambition should be to slowly diminish the presence of printers in our lives. We can achieve this by shifting away from printing whenever possible.
While it might be difficult to imagine a world without printers, we have already made progress in reducing our reliance on them. For example, the widespread adoption of digital tickets for flights and events has shown that alternative options can be more appealing. We need to apply this mindset to other aspects of our lives as well. Every time we consider printing something, we should ask ourselves if it’s truly necessary.
There are often alternatives available, such as using a FedEx shop or local library for occasional printing needs. We can also advocate for changes, like asking schools to stop requiring printed homework assignments. Additionally, there are various tips and tricks for avoiding printing documents or photos at home. For instance, scanning documents with a phone’s camera can create digital copies without the need for a printer.
Personally, I haven’t owned a printer in over 15 years and have found ways to work around the occasional need for one. It’s important to remember that printers will inevitably disappoint us in some way, regardless of the model or brand. The evidence is clear that the entire system of printers is fundamentally flawed. By minimizing our reliance on printing, we can create a future where printing is no longer necessary.
Printers themselves will not change. It’s up to us to take control and choose alternative solutions. Let’s consign printers to the depths of Hades where they belong. And remember, there’s no need to print out this newsletter. Share your thoughts and questions about printers with me at [email protected], and I’ll address them in next week’s edition.

This will allow you the freedom to purchase ink cartridges from sources other than the printer manufacturer. Instructions for disabling firmware updates can usually be found in the settings or setup menu on your printer’s display screen. LD Products offers helpful videos on disabling updates for popular printer brands.
