LONDON (AP) — Prince William is set to embark on a journey to Singapore next month to announce the recipients of his Earthshot Prize, a worldwide competition aimed at uncovering solutions to the complex challenges of climate change.
Initiated by Prince William three years ago, the Earthshot Prize aims to motivate inventors and entrepreneurs in devising technologies that combat global warming and alleviate its impact on the environment.
Singapore has been chosen as the hosting destination for this year’s awards ceremony due to its reputation as a pioneering hub for innovation in Southeast Asia, according to a statement from Kensington Palace. During his four-day visit, Prince William will engage with local organizations to gain insights into their efforts in safeguarding and restoring the planet.
Furthermore, the prince will participate in the United for Wildlife global summit, an event that unites representatives from law enforcement agencies, conservation groups, and corporations striving to combat the illicit wildlife trade, which accounts for an estimated annual value of $20 billion.
The Earthshot Prize draws its name from President John F. Kennedy’s famous 1962 “moonshot” speech, which challenged Americans to achieve the momentous feat of landing on the moon by the close of the decade. This speech profoundly inspired Prince William and his partners to establish a similar objective of discovering solutions to climate change and other environmental predicaments by 2030.
The Earthshot Prize offers a commendable prize pool of 1 million pounds ($1.2 million) for the winners in each of its five distinct categories, namely nature protection, clean air, ocean revival, waste elimination, and climate change. Notably, both the winners and the 15 finalists receive assistance in expanding their initiatives to meet the global demand.
