Prime Minister Anthony Albanese Criticizes Former Coalition Government’s JobKeeper Design

  • PM’s comments come after Qantas $2.5 billion profit
  • The airline received $900 million in JobKeeper payments
  • Has indicated it will not pay back the government assistance

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has criticized the former Coalition government for the design of the JobKeeper program, stating that taxpayers could have been better protected.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Qantas received nearly $900 million in JobKeeper payments, along with an additional $1.6 billion in government assistance. Despite recording a $2.5 billion profit, the airline has indicated that it will not repay the taxpayer-funded support.

Albanese believes that the scheme should have been better designed from the start to ensure the interests of taxpayers were safeguarded. While acknowledging the positive impact of JobKeeper in helping people during the pandemic, he emphasized the need for provisions to prevent companies from profiting without repayments.
