The Justice Department recently revealed previously redacted sections of a warrant application they submitted last year to search former President Donald Trump’s Florida property for classified documents. While some key portions of the document were already public, media organizations, including The Associated Press, pushed for further unsealing in light of a recent 38-count indictment against Trump and his valet, Walt Nauta, for concealing classified records at Mar-a-Lago.
The newly revealed paragraphs from the warrant application describe how surveillance camera footage inside the property showed boxes being moved just days before FBI and Justice Department investigators arrived to collect records. During their visit, law enforcement officials were given an envelope containing 38 classified documents and were assured that all subpoenaed records had been turned over and that a thorough search of the home had been conducted.
The inclusion of the information about the movement of boxes by Nauta in the search warrant affidavit provides insight into why the Justice Department believed they had probable cause to search Trump’s home. It also explains the investigators’ concerns that documents were intentionally being withheld from them. The affidavit refers to an individual identified as “Witness 5” who was seen carrying boxes in and out of the anteroom on multiple days. While Nauta is not named in the affidavit, the dates of the actions align with those mentioned in the indictment, as well as an FBI interview focused on the location of the boxes.
Nauta is scheduled to be arraigned in federal court in Miami on Thursday, while Trump has already pleaded not guilty to numerous felony counts related to the retention of national defense information.
