Home security camera systems like Amazon Ring and Google Nest, while intended to provide protection to households, can leave users vulnerable to hackers or even company employees. These cameras are typically placed outside homes to record live footage of who is approaching the premises, but if not secured properly, they could allow criminals to snoop around users’ digital networks and access sensitive personal data. Recently, Amazon faced allegations for failing to protect customer security and giving its Ring surveillance employees “unfettered” access to personal videos. The company has agreed to pay $5.8 million to the Federal Trade Commission to resolve the issue. Cybersecurity experts suggest ways that users can protect themselves from such incidents.
Gavin Millard, a cybersecurity expert at Tenable, suggests five ways users can safeguard their video doorbells and cameras’ security features. Firstly, never keep the default username and password assigned by a home security system as they are easily guessable and should be changed immediately. Secondly, use multifactor authentication for added protection. Thirdly, keep these devices on a separate network than the one that powers personal computers. Fourthly, regularly check for updates to keep the device up to date. Finally, avoid recording anything private and delete old footage in the library.
