The latest poll from NBC News has revealed that President Joe Biden’s approval rating has plummeted to the lowest level of his presidency, with only 40% of voters expressing approval. Notably, a majority of voters do not support his handling of foreign policy and the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Unexpectedly, the poll also shows Biden trailing former President Donald Trump in a hypothetical general election matchup, although the difference falls within the margin of error with more than 11 months to go before the election.
The survey uncovered an erosion in Biden’s support among Democrats, particularly concerning his handling of the Israel-Hamas war, in which a significant 70% of voters aged 18 to 34 disapprove of his performance.
Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt emphasized that the drastic dip in approval is largely due to Biden’s foreign policy actions, and yet, he believes Biden has the opportunity to win back the disaffected voters and eventually see a political landscape shift.
The poll shows that 40% of registered voters approve of Biden’s performance, while 57% disapprove, marking his lowest approval rating and highest disapproval rate since taking office. This trend is particularly profound among voters aged 18 to 34, with his approval rating dropping to 31% among this demographic.
Furthermore, only 33% of voters approve of Biden’s handling of foreign policy, a decline of 8 points since September, with a majority criticizing his handling of the Israel-Hamas war.
Moreover, supportive opinions of Israel’s military actions are polarized among American voters, with half of Democratic voters believing Israel has overreached. The poll suggests that this widespread discontent is shaping the 2024 general election, with Biden now trailing Trump, who maintains a 40-point advantage in the Republican primary race.
In conclusion, despite Biden’s superior standing among Democratic primary voters, the overall results of the poll paint a rather pessimistic outlook on the nation’s future direction, citing a considerable lack of confidence among voters that life for future generations will be better than it is now.
