Predictions for MLB PrizePicks Player Picks on July 28: Max Scherzer

Welcome to our Friday breakdown of the MLB PrizePicks board. We have a full slate of games today, starting no earlier than 6:40 p.m. ET. Let’s dive into some intriguing spots to target.

Max Scherzer: Over 6.0 Pitcher Strikeouts
Max Scherzer’s season has been inconsistent, with an ERA over 4.00 for the first time in over a decade. However, he has still managed a solid strikeout rate of 27.4%. Despite his ups and downs, Scherzer has recorded at least six strikeouts in 13 of his 18 starts, including his last seven starts and 10 of his last 11. The Nationals, his opponents today, have a low strikeout rate but also lack patience and resistance at the plate. With Scherzer’s ability to throw 100+ pitches regularly, he should be able to work deep into the game and tally more than six strikeouts.

Lucas Giolito: Under 5.5 Pitcher Strikeouts
Giolito has had a decent season for the White Sox, but now that he’s with the Angels and facing the Blue Jays, he’s in for a tough challenge. The Blue Jays have a strong offense, ranking high in wOBA and wRC+. They also have a low strikeout rate compared to the league average. Giolito has only managed more than 5.5 strikeouts in one of his last four starts, and that was against a high-strikeout team. In his previous outing against the Blue Jays, he struggled to rack up strikeouts. Given these factors, I expect Giolito to fall short of 5.5 strikeouts today.

Gerrit Cole: Under 7.0 Pitcher Strikeouts
While Cole has had back-to-back double-digit strikeout games, it’s worth noting that he faced two weak offenses during those starts. Tonight, he goes up against the Orioles, who have a solid offense with a good wRC+ and a relatively low strikeout rate. In their previous meeting, Cole struggled, only managing two strikeouts in five innings while allowing five runs. Cole has exceeded seven strikeouts in less than half of his starts this season, and his overall strikeout rate is lower than in previous years. Against a tougher opponent, I believe the Orioles will limit Cole to less than seven strikeouts.

Brandon Williamson: Under 4.0 Pitcher Strikeouts
Williamson has a low strikeout rate of 18.8% this season and faces a formidable Dodgers lineup. The Dodgers have one of the best offenses in baseball, ranking high in wOBA and wRC+. They also have a relatively low strikeout rate. Williamson has only recorded more than four strikeouts in five of his 12 starts. With such a low strikeout rate going against a tough lineup, I expect Williamson to fall short of four strikeouts today.

Remember, if you’re betting on baseball, consider these picks for your PrizePicks lineup. Good luck!
