Powerful Vigil Unites Friends and Co-workers in Memory of SEPTA Bus Driver Tragically Slain

GERMANTOWNOn Saturday, a poignant vigil took place for the residents of Philadelphia.

The SEPTA staff joined together to commemorate a bus driver who tragically lost his life while on duty this week.

According to Philadelphia police, the driver, 48-year-old Bernard Gribbin, was deliberately targeted while operating a bus.

Gribbin’s friends and colleagues expressed their frustration with the escalating violence and hoped that his legacy would bring about meaningful change.

“I am filled with sadness and anger. He was a dear friend,” said Shauntann Reid.

Thursday marked Bernard Gribbin’s return to work after a period of illness.

He was driving the Route 23 bus when he was shot multiple times in the vicinity of Germantown and Abbotsford avenues at approximately 10 a.m.

“The company needs to provide us with better protection,” Reid emphasized. “I understand that bulletproof glass can be costly, but I believe it is necessary for our safety.”

Gribbin dedicated 12 years to his service at SEPTA.

On Saturday, his work family extended their support to his wife and immediate family.

“He always brought humor to the workplace. He would tell us to keep pushing forward,” recalled Noelle Sanchious. “To stay strong and motivated. Regardless of the challenges confronting us today, we cannot give up.”

A woman fitting the description of the shooter was apprehended by SEPTA police shortly after the incident and taken into custody.

Law enforcement officials have identified the suspect as 21-year-old Zhontay Capers. She has been charged with murder and other related offenses in connection with the bus driver’s tragic death.

“I also feel afraid. I won’t deny my fear,” acknowledged Keith Bradford. “I have my family to protect, and I am required to return to the streets to care for them.”

In honor of their fallen colleague, Transit Workers Union Local 234 placed a billboard near their headquarters.
