Potential thunderstorms pose a risk to firefighting efforts in California and Nevada’s York Fire – Orange County Register

The firefighters battling the massive blaze in California and Nevada received some assistance from a brief but heavy downpour on Tuesday. However, meteorologists have issued a warning about potential wind shifts that could endanger the crews later on. The York Fire, which started in the Mojave National Preserve in California and spread into Nevada, is now the largest wildfire of the season in California. As of Tuesday, it has burned approximately 125 square miles (323.7 square kilometers) with 23% containment. While the 15-minute downpour helped the firefighting efforts, thunderstorms could create unstable wind conditions, with gusts of up to 40 mph (64 kph), posing a risk of the fire blowing back at the crews. The fire whirls observed on Sunday were a dangerous natural phenomenon that can occur during wildfires. Heatwaves and extreme temperatures have affected a significant portion of the population, making July the hottest month on record globally. The at-risk plant species, such as the blackbrush scrub, pinyon-juniper woodlands, and Joshua trees, may take centuries to regrow naturally, if they are able to recover at all. In Riverside County, the Bonny Fire has burned approximately 3.6 square miles (9.3 square kilometers) and is 40% contained.
