Potential Strike Approved by Auto Workers

Auto workers in Detroit have overwhelmingly voted to give their union leaders the power to call strikes against car companies in the city if a contract agreement is not reached. The United Auto Workers (UAW) union announced on Friday that preliminary results show 97% of workers have voted in favor of authorizing strikes against Stellantis, General Motors, and Ford.

The contracts between the UAW and the car companies, which represent around 146,000 workers, are set to expire on September 14th. However, the UAW clarified that the vote does not guarantee a strike will occur.

The union is demanding a 40% pay increase, the restoration of pensions for new hires, the elimination of wage tiers, and other concessions. UAW President Shawn Fain has emphasized the importance of being ready to strike in order to achieve gains from the profitable automakers. The union is also seeking to represent employees at joint venture electric vehicle battery plants and is pushing for top union wages at those factories.

Although the companies have stated that they are negotiating in good faith, talks have been progressing slowly according to Fain. He further noted the possibility of a simultaneous strike at all three companies.

Overall, this vote showcases the determination of auto workers in Detroit to secure favorable terms and improvements in their contracts.
