The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards may be delayed due to the ongoing strike in Hollywood. The Writers Guild of America and the SAG-AFTRA actors union have already caused disruptions in the film and television industry, leading Fox to consider postponing the Emmy Awards until January, according to the Los Angeles Times.
An official announcement is expected soon, although further delays may occur if there are no negotiations between the striking unions and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents the studios.
If the postponement happens, it will be the first time since 2001, after the September 11 attacks, that the Emmys have not been held as scheduled.
SAG-AFTRA and WGA members continue to strike and protest outside major studios in Los Angeles, raising concerns about issues such as residual formulas for streaming content and the use of artificial intelligence in film and TV production.
This is the first time since 1960 that both unions have gone on strike at the same time. The AMPTP represents studios, networks, and streaming services, while the actors union represents about 160,000 performers.
During negotiations, both SAG-AFTRA and WGA accused the AMPTP of bargaining in bad faith. Union President Fran Drescher expressed her disappointment with the studios, while the AMPTP claimed they had offered significant benefit boosts.
Once the Emmy Awards take place, the HBO series “Succession” will have the highest number of nominations with 27, followed by “The Last of Us” with 24, “The White Lotus” with 23, and “Ted Lasso” with 21.
The Daytime Emmy Awards, originally scheduled for June, were also postponed due to the writers strike, and a new date has yet to be announced.
