Nicolas Malvagna, a 27-year-old from Manalapan, New Jersey, has been charged with assault and harassment for hurling the phone at the Grammy-nominated artist during her show in Manhattan on Sunday, as reported by NBC New York. The impact caused Rexha to collapse to her knees, as depicted in a video, and she later needed stitches for injuries to her eye.
According to a civilian mentioned in the criminal complaint, Malvagna allegedly revealed his disturbing motive to security personnel at the Pier 17 venue. He stated, “I was trying to see if I could hit her with the phone at the end of the show because it would be funny,” as reported by CBS New York.
However, Malvagna’s attorney, Todd Spodek, stated that as a fan, Malvagna’s intention was simply to have Rexha take photos with his phone and return it as a keepsake. Spodek explained that Malvagna was following a TikTok trend of throwing phones on stage, hoping that the performer would take selfies with them. He believed that Rexha was looking in his direction.
Rexha, who reported substantial pain to the police, reassured her fans on Instagram that she was doing well despite her black and blue eye. She echoed this sentiment on TikTok, even singing the chorus of her hit song.
