A recent poll from Quinnipiac University reveals that a majority of Americans support the decision by special counsel Jack Smith to prosecute former President Donald Trump for allegedly attempting to overturn his loss in the 2020 election.

According to the university’s national survey, 54% of U.S. adults believe Trump should face criminal charges in this case, while 42% disagree. This majority includes 57% of independents, 12% of Republicans, and nearly all Democrats.

The poll also indicates that nearly two-thirds of respondents consider the federal charges against Trump to be serious, with 52% describing them as “very serious.”

Quinnipiac’s polling analyst Tim Malloy stated, “Not only do a large majority of Americans regard the federal charges as serious, more than half of Americans think the former president should face prosecution.”

However, the same poll shows that Trump’s lead in the 2024 Republican presidential primary is growing, while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is losing support. DeSantis, who was only 6 points behind Trump in a previous February poll, now trails the former president by 39 points.

Trump has pleaded not guilty to the federal indictment, which consists of four counts charging him with conspiring to subvert the will of voters and reverse President Joe Biden’s legitimate victory in the 2020 contest.

Quinnipiac surveyed 1,818 American adults from August 10-14 for this poll, which has a margin of error of 2.3 percentage points.

It’s worth noting that Trump received his fourth criminal indictment related to his alleged scheme to reverse his 2020 election loss in Georgia. Trump and 18 other defendants, including a state-level indictment, are charged with a total of 41 felony counts.

Trump now faces an unprecedented situation, being involved in four active criminal cases as a former U.S. president and potential presidential candidate. These legal challenges are affecting his campaign schedule and putting a significant financial strain on his political operation. At least one of Trump’s cases is scheduled to begin before the November 2024 election.

A majority of respondents (68%) in Quinnipiac’s poll expressed the opinion that a person convicted of a felony should be ineligible to run for president.

Despite Trump’s prior indictments, which occurred after he announced his latest White House bid, his status as the clear front-runner in the Republican primary remains unaffected.

A recent survey conducted by Quinnipiac reveals that among Republicans and GOP-leaning voters, 57% support Donald Trump in the GOP primary field. Meanwhile, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who was previously a top choice, now only has 18% support, his lowest level in any Quinnipiac poll this year.

These findings align with FiveThirtyEight’s polling tracker, which shows Trump maintaining a significant lead over his crowded field while DeSantis’ support diminishes.

Shortly before the poll’s release, Trump took to social media to highlight his commanding lead over his GOP primary rivals and criticize Fox News’ coverage of him.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed, “Fox News is going all out, just as they did in 2016, to figure out who in this very large, but failing, Republican field can beat your favorite President, Donald John Trump.”

He further added, “They use only the most negative polls, which are still great for me, and do everything possible to show that they still have a chance.”
