Police: Driver Allegedly Targets Migrant Workers in NC Hit-and-Run

North Carolina authorities have reported an incident involving an intentional assault on six migrant workers by an SUV outside a Walmart store on Sunday.

The victims were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after the incident occurred in Lincolnton, a town northwest of Charlotte, around 1:17 p.m.

Surveillance footage obtained by NBC News captures the vehicle driving towards a parking spot outside the store, seemingly intending to park. However, instead of stopping, the vehicle drives over a tree-lined median where the group was standing near a parked bus, striking them. The vehicle then flees the scene.

Authorities are seeking assistance in identifying the vehicle and the driver, described as an older white male. The vehicle in question is an older-model black midsize SUV with a luggage rack.

“The motives of the suspect are still under investigation,” stated the police in a press release.

Police in Lincolnton did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday.

A similar incident occurred in May, when an SUV plowed into a crowd of people waiting for a bus outside a migrant shelter in Brownsville, Texas, resulting in eight fatalities and ten injuries.

According to witnesses, the driver, George Alvarez, made anti-immigrant statements after the incident before attempting to flee the scene. Alvarez was also found to have cocaine, benzodiazepines, and marijuana in his system.

Authorities have yet to determine a motive for the Brownsville incident, which led to multiple manslaughter charges against Alvarez.
