Police Allege Chef Sold Harmful Substances to Young Individuals in a Vulnerable Position.

Kenneth Law, a former Canadian chef, has been charged with aiding suicide after distributing lethal substances worldwide, leading to the deaths of at least 20 people who received sodium nitrite from him. Law’s actions were discovered as a result of an ongoing investigation and an exposé by The Times. Vulnerable young people around the world looking to end their lives sought out and purchased the substance from Law’s now-removed website. Authorities in the UK, Canada, the US, Italy, and New Zealand are investigating possible suicides connected to Law’s actions in 2021. Sodium nitrite, a commonly used food additive, can be toxic and deadly. Law’s distribution of the substance has been linked to up to 21 deaths, including 13 in Britain. Law shipped the poison worldwide from a post office near Toronto, sending 1,200 packages to 40 countries. The substance is legal to sell because of its other uses, but aiding suicide is illegal in both the UK and Canada and punishable by up to 14 years in prison. Authorities are working to determine if there are more victims. If you are experiencing depression or thoughts of harming yourself, help is available through the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in the US by calling or texting 988, the Crisis Text Line by texting “HOME” to 741741, or resources offered by the International Association for Suicide Prevention.
