PLDT High Speed Hitters dominated Akari in a straight-set victory of 25-15, 25-19, 25-22 to start their Pool A campaign on a high note in the 2023 Premier Volleyball League Invitational Conference. The match took place at FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.
Despite missing key players Mean Mendrez and Mika Reyes due to injuries, PLDT received strong performances from Dell Palomata and Jovy Prado. Palomata, a former member of the Philippine women’s volleyball team, led the team with 14 points, including 10 attacks, three blocks, and an ace. Prado contributed 13 points and nine digs. Mich Morente added 11 points, while setter Rhea Dimaculangan recorded 11 excellent sets and five markers. Libero Kath Arado displayed excellent defense with 23 digs and 16 excellent receptions. Royse Tubino and Jessey De Leon also made notable contributions with eight points each.
With the win, PLDT secured second place in Pool A, just behind Creamline, who won their first two games. Akari, led by prized recruit Faith Nisperos, struggled in their PVL debut and dropped to 0-1. Dindin Santiago-Manabat was the only player to reach double digits in scoring for the Chargers, with 10 points on a 9-of-33 attacking clip.
Akari, Gerflor, and Chery Tiggo are all tied at 0-1 and will face off on July 11.
