PlayStation has started sending emails to notify players that, as a result of “content licensing arrangements,” some Discovery content will be removed from their libraries starting on December 31st – even if they have already paid for it.
The statement indicates that the change currently only affects Discovery content and offers no explanation or apology for the removal. Instead, it simply expresses gratitude for the players’ “continued support.”
“As of December 31, 2023, due to our content licensing arrangements with content providers, you will no longer be able to watch any of your previously purchased Discovery content, and the content will be removed from your video library,” the brief statement explains.
“We sincerely thank you for your continued support. Thank you.”
The decision will eradicate hundreds of shows and movies from the store and some players’ personal libraries.
Unsurprisingly, the PlayStation community has not reacted positively to the notification, with some suggesting that this is the harsh reality of an “all-digital future.” Digital content, even when purchased, is only ever licensed. This means the only way to safeguard your favorite media is to buy it physically – if it’s even available physically at all, that is.
While PlayStation did not specify the reason for the content withdrawal, some speculate that it is due to the network’s merger with Warner Bros. last year and the subsequent need to revise and renew licensing arrangements.
In case you missed it, Sony has patented an updated DualSense controller design that will offer players “predictive AI assistance features.” This means the controller will illuminate or move specific buttons and sticks to provide hints on what players need to do when they are stuck in a game.
