Actress Piper Laurie, renowned for her mesmerizing performance as an excessively devout mother in the iconic 1976 horror masterpiece “Carrie,” passed away in Los Angeles on Saturday at the remarkable age of 91, as reported by numerous media outlets.
Laurie had been battling illness for an extended period, according to her manager Marion Rosenberg.
Rosenberg described her as “one of the most extraordinary and versatile actresses of her generation, possessing a brilliant and imaginative mind, and a truly extraordinary human being.”
Throughout her extensive and diverse career, Laurie appeared in over 100 films and television shows. Her performances garnered widespread critical acclaim, particularly her remarkable portrayal opposite Paul Newman in 1961’s “The Hustler,” her pivotal role in 1986’s “Children of a Lesser God,” and her recurring character in the 1990s cult television series “Twin Peaks.”
However, it was her haunting depiction of Margaret White, the fanatical and terrifyingly overprotective mother of the introverted high school student portrayed by Sissy Spacek, that resonated with audiences in “Carrie.” This portrayal brought a profound depth to Brian De Palma’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novel.
Laurie received three Oscar nominations and two Emmy nominations for her outstanding contributions to film and television, including her exceptional work in “Twin Peaks” in 1990 and 1991.
Her final on-screen credit was her portrayal of a grandmother to an FBI informant-turned drug dealer in the 2018 film “White Boy Rick,” starring Matthew McConaughey.
