Phillies Likely to Shift Bryce Harper to 1B, Potentially Marking the End of Rhys Hoskins’ Time with Team – NBC Sports Philadelphia

Phillies GM Dave Dombrowski announced at the GM Meetings in Arizona that Bryce Harper will be transitioning to first base as the team’s everyday first baseman. This decision comes after a conversation with Harper, who expressed his willingness to play first base or the corner outfield.

The Phillies are making the call to move Harper to first base and have also talked to free agent Rhys Hoskins about the decision. While this doesn’t completely rule out a return for Hoskins, it seems unlikely. The team plans to use Kyle Schwarber as their everyday designated hitter, leaving no everyday spot for Hoskins.

Harper had never played first base before 2023 but proposed the idea to the Phillies during his recovery from Tommy John surgery. He quickly adapted to the position and has shown great instinct and athleticism in the role.

This transition is also seen as a way to potentially keep Harper healthier throughout the remainder of his 13-year contract with the team, as he has dealt with a number of injuries during his time as a Phillie.

With Harper at first base and Schwarber as the DH, the only potential change to the Phillies’ lineup for 2024 could be in left field or center field. The team is looking for Johan Rojas to earn the center field spot, and may address the left field position during the offseason. Possible free-agent options include Joc Pederson, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Tommy Pham, Teoscar Hernandez, Hunter Renfroe, Jorge Soler, and Adam Duvall.
