Phil Mickelson: How I Overcame a Gambling Hurricane that Almost Ruined My Life

Phil Mickelson, the six-time major winner and amateur betting enthusiast, recently shared his struggle with addiction. In a heartfelt social media post, the 53-year-old golfer admitted that his gambling habit had impacted his loved ones more than he realized.

Mickelson confessed, “I will refrain from betting this year as my addiction took me beyond moderation where enjoyment was replaced by a harmful obsession. It wasn’t the money that was the problem, as I’ve always been financially secure. However, my addiction caused me to neglect the presence of my loved ones and inflict harm upon them. This lack of presence has deeply hurt me.”

Several accounts, including betting guru Billy Walters, have shed light on Mickelson’s extensive gambling activities over the past three decades. It has been reported that Mickelson placed bets exceeding one billion dollars.

In his public message, Mickelson expressed gratitude towards his wife, Amy, for her unwavering support. He also cautioned other gamblers to avoid mistaking enablers for friends.

Mickelson likened his addiction to being secluded in a shelter during a hurricane, oblivious to the destruction outside. He admitted the overwhelming damage caused by his addiction made him want to retreat and avoid dealing with the aftermath. He implored others to not reach this point and suffer publicly for the profit of others.

However, Mickelson acknowledges that he was fortunate to have a supportive partner like Amy, who stood by him during his darkest moments. He credited her love and commitment for helping him regain his path towards self-improvement.

Mickelson shared, “Thanks to Amy’s love, support, and unwavering commitment, I am now on track to becoming the person I aspire to be. After years of professional help, abstaining from gambling, and being in recovery, I am finally able to find peace and serenity in each passing day. There is still work to be done to mend relationships with my loved ones, but I am taking it step by step.”
