“Phases/Faces”: ARCHIVES’ Ellis Co and Reika Mayani Combine the Past and Present in a Fusion

ARCHIVES, the fashion brand founded by Ellis Co and Reika Mayani, presented their most personal collection to date, titled “PHASES/FACES,” against the stunning backdrop of Misibis Bay’s beachfront. The show was accompanied by a refreshing breeze and techno music, creating a captivating atmosphere for the guests. The models walked down a catwalk made of gray hardwood, while giant silver floaties floated gracefully over the water, resembling mirror balls dancing on the ocean’s surface. The attention to detail and lavish preparation highlighted the significance of this collection for .ARCHIVES.

In an interview with Lifestyle.INQ, Ellis Co described the collection as a tribute to 21 individuals who had a profound impact on their lives, whether positive or negative. The inspiration for the collection came from various sources, including the location itself, Bicol, which has always been a place of solace and contemplation for the designers. Additionally, they drew inspiration from brutalist Japanese architecture and the 2021 film “DUNE.”

The gender-neutral pieces presented on the runway featured a palette of whites, blacks, grays, and browns, with a mix of boxy and figure-hugging silhouettes. Reika Mayani emphasized their strength in menswear and their desire to create wearable blazers for both men and women. The collection showcased oversized silhouettes that are unique to .ARCHIVES.

As the “Phases/Faces” show came to a close, models paraded together for a final look, showcasing the creative vision of Co and Mayani. The designers themselves appeared, expressing their gratitude to the attendees. The .ARCHIVES team, dressed in all-black looks, stood proudly behind them. Ellis Co emphasized the importance of a collaborative dynamic within their team, valuing everyone’s opinions and welcoming constructive criticism.

Apart from their creative inspirations, Ellis Co acknowledged the late Virgil Abloh as a significant influence on his fashion journey. Although Co’s current work is less influenced by Abloh, the renowned designer, known for his role at Louis Vuitton and “Off-White” brand, played a crucial role in Co’s decision to pursue fashion.

Co and Mayani’s hands-on approach and meticulous attention to detail were evident throughout the conceptualization and execution of the collection. Their youth coupled with their unwavering dedication and innovation in fashion suggests a promising future for the talented duo. With the “PHASES/FACES” collection, .ARCHIVES has set the stage for what is to come in their flourishing fashion career.
